The graduates of the University of Zagreb Music Academy (Croatia) in the class of Prof. Josip Nochta founded the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet, which has been performing with the present members since 1989. In 2009/10 they are celebrating a 20th anniversary concert season.

 

The Zagreb Saxophone Quartet are: DRAGAN SREMEC, saxophone professor and vice dean at University of Zagreb Music Academy - soprano saxophone, GORAN MERČEP, chamber music professor at University of Zagreb Music Academy - alto saxophone, SAŠA NESTOROVIĆ, chamber music professor at University of Zagreb Music Academy and director of HRT Big Band - tenor saxophone, and MATJAŽ DREVENŠEK, saxophone professor at University of Ljubljana Music Academy (Slovenia) - baritone saxophone.

playing under the baton of distinguished conductors like François Boulanger, Pavle Dešpalj, Alun Francis, Hans Graf, David Itkin, Marko Letonja, Kazushi Ono, Scott Stewart, Vjekoslav Šutej and others. Renowned ensembles and soloists often appear as guests at their concerts, including Tomislav MužekItamar Golan, the Slovenian Brass Quintet and composer Miljenko Prohaska, or the famous saxophonists Eugene Rousseau, Claude Delangle, Vincent David, Debra RichtmeyerSteven Mauk, Kenneth Tse and Quartetto Academia.

ZSQ has won some important croatian awards for their cultural activity (Milka Trnina, Judita, Vatroslav Lisinski). It has taken part in 11 discographic editions, the most important among them being Croatian Saxophone Music, Z Quartet, Cascades, Tsunagari, Ruben Radica: A Selection of Works, and Contemporary Croatian Composers - Srđan Dedić (which have won 7 Croatian discographic Porin Awards).
